Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has reported a 53% progress of the much-anticipated water supply scheme, known as the K-IV project. In light of this update during their meeting at CM House involving not only Murad Ali Shah but also key ministerial figures such as Saeed Ghani and Jam Khan Shoro.
At KARACHI: A significant assembly led by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah brought together various governmental heads, including the Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani alongside Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro among others for crucial water supply projects deliberations in Karachi, Pakistan.
The K-IV project (Phase I) is an ambitious initiative designed to deliver 260 MGD of bulk water from Keenjhar Lake across three termination points within the metropolis and its suburbs such as Pipri, NEK hydrant, Manghopir. The commencement date has been set for June 2026 with Wapda at the helm ensuring timely execution through a series of eight contract packages awarded to both local and international expertise.
Water Supply Infrastructure Updates: Project Components in Action
- Intake structure development has commenced alongside pumping stations, water conveyance via pressure pipelines is underway with work on filtration plants also progressing robustly to enhance the city’s supply capabilities.
Financial Coordination for Sindh Government Share Release: Chief Minister Murad instructed LG minister Saeed Ghani to provide a summary regarding Rs8.5 billion cost share release, which will be finalized following approval by the Senate and Provincial Assembly of Pakistan (SPAP).
Right-of-Way Compensation Issues: CM directed Mayor Murtaza Wahab with instructions to vacate stay orders on an RBOD project’s right-of-way, cleared from court impediments for uninterrupted work flow. Another matter concerning land at Rd 78 was also deliberated upon and resolution strategies were discussed including a communication between the chief minister and senior Board of Revenue member to sort out compensation discrepancies.
Hub Dam Water Allocation: Mr Shah suggested allocating an additional 50MGD from Hub Dam for Karachi, reinforcing his commitment towards reliable water sources as a key priority alongside the proposed parallel canal construction which is set to alleviate infrastructure issues and provide augmented reserves.
RBOD-I & III Projects: A joint agreement between CM Murad Ali Shah of Sindh government with Wapda Chairman Asif Zardari on forming an expert committee aiming at resolving the longstanding concerns for projects handover to provincial control, ensuring efficient management and continued maintenance.
