The free tier of accounts were available for users to sign up for from 2007 until 2012 at which point they were changed to a legacy status. Each Google Apps for Business user was given 5GB of Drive storage, with the option to purchase more. And then, on April 24, 2012, Google introduced Google Drive, a platform for storing and sharing files. Less than a month later, on July 7, 2009, Google announced that the services included in Google Apps—Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Talk—were out of beta.

  • In September 2014, Amit Singh, then-President of then-named Google for Work, stated that “60 percent of the Fortune 500” companies were paying for the service, with “more than 1,800 customers” signing up each week.

  • The tool is designed for businesses based in the United States with fewer than 1,000 employees, and integrates with Google services, such as Gmail for sending messages, Google Calendar for tracking schedules, Google Sheets for overview of all candidates, and Google Hangouts for initial conversations.
  • In addition to a web interface, Google Drive offers apps with offline capabilities for Windows and macOS computers, and Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.

Google announced shutting down Google Currents on July 5, 2023, for business and education. As part of Google Workspace, Google Currents comes with additional features designed for business use, including enhanced privacy controls and restricted communities. Google Meet is a standards-based Video Conferencing application, using proprietary protocols for video, audio and data transcoding. Although Google Hangouts remained part of Google Workspace, Google shut down Google Hangouts on November 1, 2022, and has since migrated all its users to Google Chat. It is one of two apps that constitute the replacement for Google Hangouts, the other being Google Meet.
The three access levels offered are “can edit”, “can comment” and “can view”. Files and folders can also be made “public on the web”, which means that they can be indexed by search engines and thus can be found and accessed by anyone. This generates a secret URL for the file, which may be shared via email or private messages. Google Drive incorporates a system of file sharing in which the creator of a file or folder is, by default, its owner.

  • Google reported that as of 2021, there were more than 5,300 public apps available in the Google Workspace Marketplace.
  • The free tier of accounts were available for users to sign up for from 2007 until 2012 at which point they were changed to a legacy status.
  • Google offers 30 GB of Drive storage for all Google Workspace Starter customers, and unlimited storage for those using Google Workspace for Business.
  • In 2023, a bug in Google Drive for Desktop resulted in a small number of files over a period of 6-months to disappear from user’s accounts.
  • And then, on April 24, 2012, Google introduced Google Drive, a platform for storing and sharing files.
  • The tool lets employers track job candidates’ contact information, as well as résumés, calendar invitations, and allows for business partners to share feedback on candidates.

Features

Google Drive allowed users to share drive contents with other Google users without requiring any authorization from the recipient of a sharing invitation. Although Google has a 99.9% uptime guarantee for Google Drive for Google Workspace customers, Google Drive has suffered downtimes for both consumers and business users. In March 2017, Google announced that Google Drive had 800 million active users. On September 21, 2015, it was announced that Google Drive had over one million organizational paying users. On October 1, 2014, at its Atmosphere Live event, it was announced that Google Drive had 240 million monthly active users.
Furthermore, it states that “the data that companies, schools and government agencies put into our G Suite services does not belong to Google. Whether it’s corporate intellectual property, personal information or a homework assignment, Google does not own that data and Google does not sell that data to third parties.” Google states that “we do not collect, scan or use your G Suite data for advertising purposes and do not display ads in G Suite, Education, or Government core services”. The tool is designed for businesses based in the United States with fewer than 1,000 employees, and integrates with Google services, such as Gmail for sending messages, Google Calendar for tracking schedules, Google Sheets for overview of all candidates, and Google Hangouts for initial conversations. Users can also search for contacts, with results including the person’s contact details, as well as events and files in common.

Easy and secure access to your content

In addition to a web interface, Google Drive offers apps with offline capabilities for Windows and macOS computers, and Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Google Drive is a file-hosting service and synchronization service developed by Google. The developer, Google, indicated that the app’s privacy practices may include handling of data as described below. For additional storage, you can upgrade to Google Workspace or Google One as an in-app purchase.Storage subscriptions purchased from the app will be charged to your iTunes Account, and automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Store, share, and collaborate on files and folders from your mobile device, tablet, or computer

In a CNET report, Zack Whittaker noted that “the terms and service have come under heavy fire by the wider community for how it handles users’ copyright and intellectual property rights”. The Android version of Google Drive has been criticized for requiring users to individually toggle each file for use offline instead of allowing entire folders to be stored offline. He wrote that Drive was “a great addition to Google armory of apps and everything does work seamlessly”, while again criticizing the interface for being “confusing” and that the file view was “not quite intuitive enough” without file icons. In September 2016, Google announced Team Drives, later renamed Shared Drives, as a new way for Google Workspace teams to collaborate on documents and store files. It includes unlimited storage and support for individual files up to 5 betico TB in size in addition to full encryption.

Google Drive is a part of Google Workspace

As of 2021, these features have been consolidated into Google Drive for Desktop, which provides both backup and file streaming capabilities. Another, Save to Google Drive, allows users to save web content directly to their Drive. Any changes made to files in that folder will automatically sync to Google servers once an internet connection is reestablished.
Further enhancements came, on June 25, 2007, when Google added a number of features to Google Apps, including mail migration from external IMAP servers, shared address books, a visual overhaul of Google Docs and Google Sheets, and increased Gmail attachment size. Google announced an edition for schools, then known as Google Apps for Education, on October 10, 2006. Available for free as a beta service, it included Gmail, Talk, Calendar, and the Page Creator, which was later replaced with Sites. From February 10, 2006, Google started testing a version of the service at San Jose City College, hosting Gmail accounts with SJCC domain addresses and admin tools for account management. The suite was first launched in February 2006 as Gmail for Your Domain, before being expanded into Google Apps for Your Domain in the same year, later rebranded as G Suite in 2016, then rebranded again in 2020 as Google Workspace. Depending on edition Google Workspace may also include the digital interactive whiteboard Jamboard and an option to purchase add-ons such as the telephony service Voice.

Search results can be narrowed by file type, ownership, visibility, and the open-with app. Files in other formats can also be handled through third-party apps that work with Google Drive, available from the Chrome Web Store. Google reported that as of 2021, there were more than 5,300 public apps available in the Google Workspace Marketplace. In March 2013, Google released an API for Google Drive that enables third-party developers to build collaborative apps that support real-time editing. In February 2013, the “Create” menu in Google Drive was revamped to include third-party apps, thus effectively granting them the same status as Google’s own apps. On September 13, 2021, the URL to a portion of existing files was changed, ostensibly for security reasons.
