Sindh Government’s Initiatives for Improving Karachi’s Public Transport System
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted Sindh government’s initiatives for improving intracity public transport system in Karachi. On Thursday, the minister vowed to make better commuting facilities available to people in all cities of the province.
During a meeting with a journalist delegation from the Court Reporters Association, Sharjeel Memon emphasized the important role of court reporters in maintaining transparency and accountability within the judicial system. He stated that each department has a specific role, and if performed efficiently, many problems can be resolved.
The minister also highlighted the significance of Motorways in national economy and urged for priority in completing the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway project. Despite challenges, work on the BRT project is progressing rapidly. However, managing prevailing network of water and other civic utilities has caused some delays.
The metropolis needs 15,000 buses to meet growing demand for public transport. The Sindh government launched People’s Bus Service in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Larkana, and Sukkur. A command and control center has been established to monitor the service, ensuring timely addressing of complaints.
Fitness certificates are being issued for old buses. However, there are only two inspectors in Karachi, which is insufficient coverage for all vehicles. To ease traffic pressure on roads of the provincial capital, illegal bus stands have been relocated to the outskirts of the city.
