In ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th Dec, 2024) A wall collapse trapped at least six people under the rubble after an explosion caused by a gas leakage from pipelines in Shafiq Colony early Sunday morning. “The family was asleep when they heard loud bangs and felt their room shake,” said one of the injured, who suffered minor burns on his hands while trying to escape through a window before being rescued.”
Rescue teams and police rushed to the scene: According to reports, rescue officials were able to carefully extract the injured from the debris. These individuals are now transported for hospital treatment, where they receive urgent care for their various injuries. Abid Khan of the Bomb Disposal Unit shared his observations with local authorities and media outlets stating that “the explosion was caused by gas leakage” due to an old pipeline infrastructure suffering from neglect:
- Outdated pipelines were leaking because they hadn’t been maintained or replaced for years.
- A short circuit led the unsecured wires near these aging pipes to spark, igniting a fire that enhanced the gas leakage danger and intensity of the explosion itself.
In light of this incident: It is crucial not only in Shafiq Colony but across all neighborhoods where residents rely on outdated infrastructure for their safety—to demand attention to maintenance issues with aging utilities before it’s too late, which could prevent future tragedies.
